Japan's Share of the Semiconductor Supply Chain
Japanese companies hold about 31% of the global semiconductor equipment market, second to the United States, and about 48% of key semiconductor materials, according to Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

Equipment and materials by country
Japan is a smaller producer of chips than Taiwan, South Korea or the United States, but its companies supply a large part of the tools and materials every fab needs. The charts below are METI's breakdown of global sales by the home country of the supplier, based on OMDIA data for fiscal 2021.
- United States 35%
- Japan 31%
- Europe, Middle East & Africa 22%
- China 9%
- South Korea 2%
- Taiwan 1%
- Japan 48%
- Taiwan 16%
- South Korea 13%
- Europe, Middle East & Africa 10%
- United States 9%
- China 3%
What has changed since
In a December 2025 review, METI noted that Japan's share of equipment sales shrank between 2021 and 2023, most visibly in the large markets for lithography, thin-film deposition and etching equipment. Japanese companies remain strongest in narrower steps such as coat/develop, cleaning, dicing and test. See where Japanese equipment makers lead for the step-by-step picture, and semiconductor materials where Japan leads for the materials side.
