Overview

The company traces back to NEC Hitachi Memory, formed in 1999 from the DRAM units of NEC and Hitachi and later renamed Elpida Memory. After Elpida's bankruptcy, Micron acquired it in 2013. It is headquartered in Higashihiroshima, Hiroshima.

In May 2023 Micron said it expected to invest up to 500 billion yen in 1-gamma DRAM technology in Japan over the following years and to bring EUV lithography to Hiroshima. METI has certified three Micron plans for subsidies of up to 46.47, 167 and 500 billion yen.

Business: DRAM fab in Hiroshima (Micron Technology)

Why it matters

METI describes Micron as the only company manufacturing DRAM in Japan, which is why its plans receive large subsidies.
Micron said it would ramp EUV-based 1-gamma DRAM in Taiwan and Japan, making Hiroshima one of its two leading-edge DRAM bases.
