Japanese Wafer Manufacturing Equipment Makers

Japanese makers of the machines that turn crystals into wafers: crystal growth furnaces, wire saws for slicing ingots, and lapping, grinding and polishing machines for flat, thin wafers.

Overview

Before any circuit is made, a single crystal is grown, sliced into wafers and ground and polished until it is flat to within a few tens of nanometres. These steps belong to wafer makers rather than chip fabs, and the equipment is a distinct, smaller market.

Japan is home to two of the largest silicon wafer makers and to many of the machine builders that supply them, from wire saws for silicon and SiC ingots to double-side polishers.
