Overview
Ajinomoto was founded in 1909 and is headquartered in Chuo, Tokyo. ABF grew out of its chemistry know-how and was commercialized in 1999.
A package substrate connects a chip to the circuit board. High-end CPUs and GPUs need substrates with many thin wiring layers, and ABF is the insulating layer between them. Substrate makers laminate the film, drill vias and plate copper wiring on top.
Business: ABF insulating film for package substrates
Why it matters
AI accelerators use large packages with many substrate layers, so demand for ABF rises with AI server shipments.
ABF is a clear case of a Japanese company from outside the traditional chemical industry holding a key position in advanced packaging.
