Overview

Mitsubishi Electric was founded in 1921 and is headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo. Its power device business is based in Fukuoka, with wafer fabs in Koshi (Kumamoto), Fukuyama (Hiroshima) and Itami (Hyogo).

In March 2023 it doubled its five-year investment plan to about 260 billion yen through March 2026, including about 100 billion yen for a new 8-inch SiC wafer plant at its site in the Shisui area of Kumamoto Prefecture.

Business: IGBT and SiC power modules, RF and optical devices

Why it matters

Power modules convert and control electricity; demand comes from railways, renewables and EVs rather than from smartphones and PCs.
Semiconductors are a small part of the group, so Mitsubishi Electric does not appear in the semiconductor revenue ranking.
